The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe

As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher." The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks.

He admits that he is superstitious aboutthe house, and that its continual gloom has broken him down. Usher states thathe and his sister, Madeline, are the last of the line of Usher, and thatMadeline is sick with a disease the doctors cannot diagnose. Through the years, the siblings convinced themselves that this simply couldn't have actually been real. They shared a traumatic event at a formative time in life, and had been drinking quite a bit—their meeting with Verna must have been a shared delusion, and for years, they wrote it off as such. And as Roderick Usher got sicker and sicker in real life—his rare form of vascular dementia gave him horrific hallucinations, including Griswold's Jester costume and his various children's dead bodies—his bill came due, and all of his children died in front of him.

Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family. On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body.

The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. While under testimony, he went against what he said he would do, saying instead that Dupin was harassing him, that Fortunato did no wrong, and this his signatures were never forged. The final episode finally reveals what Roderick and Madeline did—and were running from—all those years ago, and how they first got involved with Verna in the first place.

Cast & Crew

BY THE TIME you reach the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, the latest of Netflix's horror limited series from writer/director Mike Flanagan, there have been a lot of scares, a lot of violence, and a lot of lore. But, still, a few lingering things remain that need to click in order for the series—based on the collected writings of Edgar Allen Poe—to really all fall into place. When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature.

He passed out, waking up tied to a chair in a secret tiny room behind a brick wall being built. She's first present tending bar when Roderick and Madeline stop in on New Year's Eve 1979, and we don't know what's going on with them, but we know they're nervous about something. Throughout the rest of the series, Verna continues to show up—more than 40 years later, always looking exactly the same as the day she met them. She shapeshifts, and knows everything, always letting the Usher children know exactly what the universe needs them to know before their time is up.

Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form. “The Fall of the House of Usher” stands as one of Poe’s most popular and critically examined stories. Without giving too much away — because trust us, you’ll want to be surprised — the horror drama follows Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company, who must face his shady past when each of his children begin to die in mysterious and brutal fashion. When one steps back and looks at the whole narrative of the season of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” it sags in places. Most of the flashbacks to a young Usher and Dupin are thin, especially compared to the wicked fun on display in the fates of the Usher children. It feels like padding to get episodes to a full hour when Flanagan and company could have leaned even more into the episodic structure that highlights a single Poe per chapter.

But the themes remain the same—guilt, obsession, vengeance, and a supernatural sense of justice. Roderick Usher’s children are getting what they deserve, not merely because they are the fruit of a very poisoned tree but because they have made horrific decisions to stay in the shelter of wealth and privilege. Usher has been reimagined as the head of a massive pharmaceutical company he runs with his twin sister, Madeline (Mary McDonnell). Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife.

He paints a dark underground tunnel with beams ofstrange light shining through. Usher writes songs on his guitar, and thenarrator recounts one entitled “The Haunted Palace.” In the song a prosperouspalace falls, and only dancing ghosts remain. Roderick admits he believes theUsher house is sentient and that a foul atmosphere grows from the grounds. Hestates that the house has moulded generations of the Usher family and hascaused his current state.

Over the next week, both Roderick and the narrator find themselves increasingly agitated. We heard this banging throughout the series, and much like Momma Usher when Roderick and Madeline were children, Madeline was not quite as dead as she initially seemed. She burst above ground, strangling Roderick as a surrounding storm began to take their childhood home down to the ground with them, just as Dupin got out of the house in time.

Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled. It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly.

To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death. A storm begins, and Roderick comes to the narrator's bedroom (which is situated directly above the house's vault) in an almost hysterical state. Throwing the windows open to the storm, Roderick points out that the lake surrounding the house seems to glow in the dark, just as Roderick depicted in his paintings, but there is no lightning or other explainable source of the glow.

Accordingly, commentaries on social injustice, morality, and utilitarianism proliferated in the mid-19th century. Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” he deliberately subverts convention by rejecting the typical practices of preaching or moralizing and instead focusing on affect and unity of atmosphere.

Even before the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, it's abundantly clear that Verna (Carla Gugino) is no mere human being. But Verna (which, if you notice, is an anagram of RAVEN) represents some kind of devil or adjacent otherworldly force, a harbinger of death who exists only to tempt and test the ethics and morality of those who need testing. As we approach the finale of The Fall of the House of Usher, after learning of Frederick's (Henry Thomas) grisly death in the penultimate episode, it would seem that we've finally caught up with the present, where Roderick sits, drinking expensive cognac and speaking with Dupin. But things aren't always as they seem; the final episode takes us inside everything that lingers, bringing everything full circle. Netflix will release The Fall of the House of Usher on Thursday, Oct. 12, TVLine has learned. The new series from horror auteur Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass) is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) attends a joint funeral for a number of his adult children, and in a montage of press coverage, we see how a series of “freak accidents” has wiped out his entire bloodline. The Usher patriarch then sits in a dilapidated mansion with Carl Lumbly’s Auguste Dupin (based on Poe’s famous recurring character who is considered the first detective in fiction) and offers him a confession. We then flash back a few weeks to when the Usher clan were on top of the world, having become Sackler-esque billionaires peddling opiates that have inflicted untold misery on the American public, and begin to watch their painful demise. Late one stormy night, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an investigator named C. All of these nightmarish visions are attached to the family drama that Usher offers up for Dupin, giving the season a clever episodic structure in that each chapter intertwines a different Poe source into the overall saga of the Ushers.

Flanagan has form with making tributes to some of horror’s most beloved oeuvres. He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality.

How did Lenore, Madeline, and Roderick all die?

One of the most interesting and perplexing threads of the finale comes with the way Arthur Pym's story wraps up. That left only two Ushers—the ones who entered the world together, and had to go out as well. While Madeline tried to skirt the system by having Roderick overdose on his own Fortunato meds, Verna wasn't letting that happen. And so Roderick invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where their mother once died (and rose again, only to strangle a man to death before finally dying herself), to share a drink. The limited series will consist of eight episodes, with Flanagan and frequent collaborator Michael Fimognari each directing four installments. The limited series will mark Flanagan and producing partner Trevor Macy’s fifth project at Netflix; Fimognari and Emmy Grinwis (Snowfall, Mrs. Davis) also will serve as executive producers.

Feast your eyes on a new clip above and learn more about the limited series below. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ can also be analysed as a deeply telling autobiographical portrait, in which Roderick Usher represents, or reflects, Poe himself. After all, Roderick Usher is a poet and artist, well-read (witness the assortment of books which he and the narrator read together), sensitive and indeed overly sensitive (to every sound, taste, sight, touch, and so on). Many critics have interpreted the story as, in part, an autobiographical portrait of Poe himself, although we should be wary, perhaps, of speculating too much about any parallels.

According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility. As Roderick talks about his sister’s illness, the narrator sees her pass through a distant part of the house. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is probably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous story, and in many ways it is a quintessential Gothic horror story. We have a mysterious secret afflicting the house and eating away at its owner, the Gothic ‘castle’ (here, refigured as a mansion), premature burial (about which Poe wrote a whole other story), the mad owner of the house, and numerous other trappings of the Gothic novel.

It was met with positive reviews, with critics praising its production values, directing, and performances (in particular from Gugino, Greenwood and Mark Hamill), although they were divided on its narrative, notably in relation to the source materials. The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed. The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good. In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion. He witnesses Madeline's reemergence and the subsequent, simultaneous death of the twins.

In exchange for this protection, both Roderick and Madeline had to consent to the bargain that at the end of Roderick's life, just before he was fated to die anyway, his entire bloodline would die with him. Roderick and Madeline would also have to die at the same time, leaving this world the same way they came into it. The siblings agreed to the deal, left the bar, and soon after became convinced that the whole thing had been a shared delusion.

These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way. What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. Siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built a pharmaceutical company into an empire of wealth, privilege and power; however, secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty sta...

On the other hand, there are plenty of strange things about the Usher family. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced. Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family.

As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with. “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her. It was shortly after this that Auggie arrived at the house to hear Roderick's confession. Only, as evidenced by the noises coming from the basement, Madeline wasn't quite dead.

Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. When Roderick speaks, he states that his illness is hereditary and withoutcure, which causes him to have highly reactive senses.

ICE HOUSE SMUD ICH

Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Throughout the brick building in downtown Pasadena, vintage and modern flourishes demand attention like stylistic punchlines.

How Are Icehouses Different From Convenience Stores and Bars?

A regular at the Comedy Store, the Improv and the Laugh Factory, Johnny said he and his dad always talked about opening their own club together before Jerry’s death in 2013 at 80. This article was written by Roger Mabie and originally published in the 2006 Pilot Log. Thank you to Hudson River Maritime Museum volunteer Adam Kaplan for transcribing the article. The Ice House reopens in Pasadena with laughs, lofty goals and Lakers magic

Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

ICE HOUSE (SMUD) (ICH)

Icehouses also functioned as defacto convenience stores where locals could get some simple grocery items (and other grab-and-go products like takeout beer and cigarettes). “Because the icehouse always had the ice, it made sense for them to carry other perishable goods that required refrigeration, such as milk and eggs. Of course, serving cold beer was a no-brainer, since people were always coming for other things,” says Morgan Weber, beverage director and co-owner of Eight Row Flint in Houston. Your first actual construction step will be the pouring or setting of 6″ to 12″-thick footings reaching below the frost line around the base of the proposed ice house.

They were often built near bodies of water like lakes or rivers, allowing the ice to be harvested during winter months. The ice would then be stored in the ice house, and the cool natural surroundings would help to preserve it. By 400 BCE, Persian engineers were building yakhchāls in the desert. The structure used evaporative cooling, radiative cooling, solar chimney, and diurnal heat reservoir techniques to store ice, food, and sometimes make ice.

Sitting in his designated booth at the back of the Legendary Room, Buss says he can’t wait to enjoy a show with the spirit of his favorite comedy fan right beside him. Holding himself to a higher standard because of his father is nothing new to Buss, who grew up in the midst of one of the world’s greatest sports dynasties. His father’s notoriously outside-the-box methods of running a team made him a genius and impossible to predict.

The ice would then be cut with either a handsaw or a powered saw blade into long continuous strips and then cut into large individual blocks for transport by wagon back to the ice house. Because snow on top of the ice slows freezing, it could be scraped off and piled in windrows. The origins of the ice delivery trade can be traced back to the early 19th century when ice harvesting became a viable industry. Leftovers were preserved longer, most likely to the chagrin of the children in a home, and around the same time inventors were working on creating American frozen food meals. Refrigeration techniques had been utilized by breweries and then spread to Chicago’s meat packing industry. They were using refrigerants like sulfur dioxide and methyl chloride which were harmfully impacting people who were exposed to it.

“We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? They brought in plenty of glitz and glamour befitting the Silver Queen. “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape.

This improvement in preservation methods made it possible to maintain a wider variety of perishable goods, including fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meats. Furthermore, some ice houses utilized underground or partially underground storage. By being partially buried or located in naturally cool areas, these structures could take advantage of the cooler temperatures found underground to help keep the ice cold for longer periods. Overall, the functioning mechanism of an ice house during the 19th century revolved around insulation, underground construction, layering of ice blocks, and ventilation. These elements worked together to preserve ice for extended periods, providing a valuable cooling resource in an era before refrigeration technology became widespread.

The glowing stalactite chandeliers, electric neon art of cacti, waves and sun punctuate the walls of the California Room, the venue’s second stage. Guests pass through the red-brick walls of the revamped bar and patio area into the revived main room. Despite the club’s new mainstage set up, dubbed the Legendary Room, it still retains an intimate vibe where stand-up idols and up-and-comers have thrived on the raw energy and laughter of a working class clientele. Once again the building is outfitted with mics in the ceiling to capture the roar of one of L.A.’s loudest laughing crowds. It’s a sound new owner Johnny Buss — the oldest son of the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss — has been waiting to hear since he bought the place in 2019. As each new year turned from January to February the thickness of the ice on local ponds was a topic of conversation.

During winter, workers would cut large blocks of ice from the frozen water surface using specially designed saws. These blocks were then transported to the ice house, either by horse-drawn sleds or manually using ice tongs. In the 19th century, various methods were used to keep ice houses cold. Ice houses were built with thick walls made of materials such as stone, brick, or wood.

These walls were often packed with insulation such as sawdust, straw, or even seaweed to help preserve the cold temperature inside. The 19th century ice house served as a vital structure in preserving perishable goods and facilitating economic growth during this era. The construction of these innovative ice storage facilities revolutionized the way society approached food preservation and distribution. The importance of ice houses cannot be understated, as they allowed for the expansion of the agricultural industry and the development of urban centers. These ice storage facilities not only played a crucial role in supporting the growing demands of the population, but also contributed to the overall progress and advancement of society during the 19th century. The legacy of 19th century ice houses is a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a reminder of the transformative power of technology and innovation.

The flavors were reportedly fresher, and that was all the public needed to know. While the ice business boomed, so too did inventors who strove to create ice. Soon after Mr. Tudor suggested ice in drinks, it became more and more necessary to have it. Newspapers of the time would report that ice harvests were either plentiful or hardly there at all.

Keep in mind that your actual taxes will vary based on your home value and location. Areas with higher home values will typically pay higher property taxes compared to areas with lower home values. Property tax rates will also depend on your county—for example, as of 2022, Marin County collects the highest tax rate in California while Modoc County has the lowest. Note that refinance loans in California are also non-recourse loans, unless you opt for a cash-out refinance to get cash out of your home equity for something like a vacation or to pay off debt. Most home loans require at least 3% of the price of the home as a down payment. Some loans, like VA loans and some USDA loans allow zero down. Although it's a myth that a 20% down payment is required to obtain a loan, keep in mind that the higher your down payment, the lower your monthly payment.

This solution allows you to equalize your roof’s temperature by heating it from the outside instead of blowing in cold air from the inside (as we mention next in “Fast Fixes”). Do be sure to frame out a door and ventilate the structure well at its peak under the eaves, however. Oldest written documents in the shape of cuneiform tablet that date from 1780BC record the construction of an ice house in the northern Mesopotamian town of Terqa.

Blow in Cold Air

In the 19th century, ice houses were constructed to preserve ice before the invention of refrigeration. These structures were typically built partially underground to take advantage of the natural insulation provided by the soil. In this article, we will explore the fascinating world of ice houses in the 19th century. Step back in time as we uncover the intricate craftsmanship behind these structures and delve into their vital role in preserving perishable goods. Join me on this journey through history as we unravel the mysteries of the 19th century ice house. During the Civil War, ice deliveries from the North were suspended, so local ice plants began to produce what was called “mechanical” ice.

Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile. This 1914 map of part of Main Street in Falmouth shows the two ice houses in the photo above. Where did icehouses come from, why have they been so beloved in Texas, and what do they look like today?

Yakhchāl

“Icehouses originally were places with garage doors and no air conditioning [for guests], and they only served beer. Letting in as little of the warm outside air as possible and always remembering to leave what’s left covered with sawdust. The next winter, when you’re ready to refill the house, haul the old sawdust out to the compost heap or the garden and pack the new ice with fresh ground wood.

What was the purpose of ice houses in the 19th century?

Now, Boston in 1783 was just recovering from the American Revolution. The population that had once thrived was small; most had left during the revolution to escape the ravages of war and military takeovers. The population was 10,000 in 1780 and many were struggling to make money. Tudor was by no means poor himself though; in fact he had the opportunity to go to Harvard. It wasn’t his destiny; instead he and his brother hunted, fished, practiced courting rituals, and learned the life of the privileged.

Ice can be made now with electric refrigerators, food is easily preserved with the cold. Prominent men and women craved it in the summer months, and once a drink was enjoyed cool and not tepid, it was a necessity for those that could afford it. Of course it was only the wealthy who could afford to buy or keep the ice. During the 19th century, ice houses played a significant role in preserving and storing ice for various purposes. These structures were designed to insulate ice, preventing it from melting quickly.

Thomas Moore, in an 1803 essay about icehouse construction, suggested placing one’s icehouse on the north face of a hill, preferably sheltered from prevailing winds. At Gen. Charles Ridgely’s estate, Hampton, in Baltimore, and Montpelier, the icehouse was placed on the north side of a gentle incline, near the front door of the main house. In each case the potential visual intrusion of the icehouse was minimized. At Hampton, it was covered by an earthen mound; at Montpelier, it was surmounted by a domed temple. In other cases the icehouse was incorporated more subtly into the landscape design [Fig.

But ice harvesting became popular, and with a few tweaks in shipping it and preserving it, people began to ask for it. Competition began to sprout up in Maine along the rivers, and other ice companies emerged as the demand grew. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents. Americans, who scoffed at the initial idea of an ice trade, instantly became hooked when they were shown the advantages of using it. Fredric Tudor, the “Ice King”, went bankrupt many times, but leaves an enduring legacy. Ventilation was another important aspect of the functioning mechanism. A ventilation system, often in the form of a chimney or air shaft, allowed for the circulation of cool air within the ice house, preventing the buildup of moisture and odors. The ice house was designed to minimize heat exchange from the outside, so it often had a low entrance and a small door or window.

This innovation allowed for the extended preservation of perishable foods and the facilitation of long-distance transportation. Before electricity, the only way to access ice was to cut it from ponds and lakes during the winter, and to store it in ice houses to keep the ice frozen through the spring and summer. An ice house’s system of vents, drains, and insulation kept ice cold.

Communities gather over ice-covered ponds and snow banks to watch local historians as they demonstrate 19th and 18th century harvesting techniques. Some audience members are invited to participate, carrying large chunks of ice to a sled where it is pulled by a horse to an ice house - if one is available. This allowed for better temperature control, as the earth provided further insulation and kept the interior cooler than the surrounding environment.

A rake with wheels, like the one shown here, will instantly change the exterior temperature of your roof without damaging shingles. If you’re wondering how to fix an ice dam on your roof, here’s how you can prevent them altogether or remove them if they’ve already formed. Though Buss and Toler believe that the entertainment business is all about the fans, it’s also the club’s duty to take care of the comics. 2100 South (across the street from Sugar House Park) and 570 S. Remember that coffee grounds don't kill mosquitoes or other pests — instead, they work as a repellent that discourages them from coming near your home. If you have a significant pest problem and the coffee grounds aren't as effective as you like, you may want to consider using other methods. For instance, a lethal DIY method like a DIY soapy water trap can help get rid of mosquitoes. As a last resort, consider using pesticides or calling a professional to help with your infestation.

Coffee grounds are one of the household staples that repel mosquitos like magic. If you want to keep your home free from mosquitoes during the summer months, consider placing a jar of fresh or used coffee grounds in strategic locations around your home, such as on the patio. If you're looking for a sleek and minimalistic oasis to sip some quality brew, Maru Coffee should be at the top of your list. More From the Los Angeles Times

The husband and wife team have announced a second location in the same space as the Kaiser Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Medical Offices (3782 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard), opening in late October. The Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills arm will have a massive outdoor seating area for those seeking medical service, but will undoubtedly attract locals from the adjacent residential neighborhood. Whether you're in Los Feliz, Beverly Hills, or the Arts District in DTLA, Maru Coffee is not far. That said, all of the coffee is actually roasted at the DTLA location, and guests can always expect quality to remain a top priority. If you like to have some top-notch beans on hand for coffee at home, definitely pick up a bag of the light-roasted Kenya Chinga. If you're looking to get a mindful boost, opt for the Chagaccino, which uses chaga mushrooms along with sweeteners and vanilla to create an espresso-based drink that will also help you focus.

While fresh or used coffee grounds work well for repelling mosquitoes, burning coffee grounds can be even more effective. Simply add some lighter fluid to your coffee grounds or place them in your fire pit. This will create a powerful scented fog that serves as an effective deterrent to mosquitoes. Coffee grounds are especially known for repelling the Aedes albopictus mosquito, which is commonly found in the southeastern United States and in climates that are warm year-round.

Expect tonics and canned coffees and bubbly shrub sodas in addition to every classic coffee drink you could want, as well as home equipment, trendy merch and pastries. This charming Historic Filipinotown café offers all-day fare that's worth lingering over—already an easy feat, given the free Wi-Fi and creative coffee there, too. Right in the middle of Thai Town is the Black- and Filipino-owned coffee shop Obet & Del’s. The coffee beans are hand-roasted, and all of the blended teas are organic.

Settle in at the best coffee shops in Los Angeles

The modern coffee shop is situated right in the heart of Melrose Avenue in the Melrose Arts District, and you'll always find an array of locals and visitors popping in for a shot of espresso. Upon walking in, the first thing to greet guests is a wall of greenery that creates the outline of a sasquatch. The curved white booths are contemporary while still being inviting, and the shop can easily be used for working or hanging. Located on the Westside in the hip beach town of Venice, the original Menotti's Coffee Shop is a local gem that blends coffee with culture.

Best Coffee Shops In Los Angeles, Ranked

Prepare to stay awhile at Mandarin Coffee in Pasadena, which is located at the Burlington Arcade’s glass-covered courtyard. This Asian and woman-owned cafe offers a seating area as enjoyable as the espresso drinks, like the cappuccino made with espresso and sweetened coconut cream. One of LA’s best daytime coffee stops is at the Hollywood Bowl.

An upscale City Creek restaurant has closed its doors

Or check out its sister location, Woodcat Coffee, located farther down Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. This grab-and-go coffee shop is a charming and quaint neighborhood spot that specializes in traditional espresso shots and concoctions. While most people order and take their goods on the go, there are a handful of tables inside where you can post up for an hour while you read a good book or catch up with a friend.

Anderson said he wanted the cafe to have a vibe that’s “moody” but “cozy,” with ceramic cups and good-tasting coffee. “It was like trying to create that experience where I could approach more of the connoisseurs of coffee that appreciate that kind of stuff,” while still being accessible, he said. A friend got the whole exchange on video, as well as a moment where Reeves holds up his cup of coffee and says “Urban Sailor Coffee” before tapping it against Norman Reedus’ cup.

Though the coffee drinks are the specialty at Tilt, the matcha and other tea offerings are extensive. Located on the bottom floor of the Medallion apartments, Tilt is the place for coffee enthusiasts who crave good service and are in the mood for a strong single-origin cold brew. Culver City's modernist Cognoscenti Coffee started in 2009 and is staffed by friendly baristas who know everything about coffee. Cognoscenti doesn’t use fancy drink names and focuses on producing quality drip coffee, cappuccino, lattes, and cold brew in the Fashion District, Downtown LA, and Culver City.

With three locations in Los Angeles, La La Land Kind Cafe can be found in Santa Monica, Calabasas, and The Grove in West Hollywood. The white and yellow interior is modern yet aesthetic and warm, and to say the service is friendly would be an understatement. A local favorite, Rose Park Roasters has three locations throughout Long Beach. If ordering from the Fourth Street outlet, take a seat and enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows and house-made pastries.

However, the second Culver City location has become equally as popular, while the on-the-go sprinter van brings your favorite brew straight to you on wheels. Patrons are able to check where the van will be each week, but it can also be booked for parties and private events such as weddings or birthday celebrations. The colorful facade, warm interior, and honey lavender lattes are what make Bloom & Plume one of LA’s most stylish coffee bars. Co-owner Maurice Harris has ample skill as an artist and floral designer and obsesses over both in his Historic Filipinotown cafe.

The baristas are super talented, and you can expect consistent quality across the board during each visit. They serve such delicious and singular drinks as the Spanish latte, made with sweetened condensed milk and cinnamon; the bubbly espresso and tonic; and the sweet Venice Beach Cappuccino, prepared with homemade vanilla syrup. Located off Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, Primo Passo Coffee Co. is a modern coffee shop that sells everything from iced matcha to classic cappuccinos. Despite being sleek and aesthetic, this locally loved coffee shop has a neighborhood feel, and you'll always find people hard at work on their laptops while getting their caffeine fix. Coffee is definitely the star of the show here, but Primo Passo also serves some tasty pastries and sweets.

The two brainstormed ideas and came up with the plan to start a coffee business. Although coffee grounds repel the Aedes albopictus mosquito, that's not all they can do. Coffee grounds also help repel ants, wasps, fleas, bees, and many other pests that you see around your home. Aside from insects, the smell of coffee can also help repel mice and other rodents. Placing coffee grounds on your patio serves as an all-in-one solution and gives you a great bang for your buck. For another way to cut down on waste, ditch the disposable cups for a reusable tumbler like this one from Simple Modern.
